Wireless mouse causing issues with a new monitor

Recently I faced the issue of my Logitech mouse (M275) and Keyboard (K270) with a unified receiver not working properly with a new monitor.

After searching for an answer found this peculiar solution, which actually worked for me. So, this very short article is about the problem and the solution.

The issue was related to my office laptop and the new monitor I got. My office laptop has a Display port and using that I’ve connected the laptop with the monitor. This worked without an issue for a few minutes, until I noticed that both the wireless mouse and the keyboard (with a unified receiver) started to cause issues. Mouse seems be lagging and keyboard took a while to register the keypresses. This became a real nuisance to the point it was difficult to get any work done.

While searching for an answer there were many solutions related to resetting USB hub related power settings, etc. But, the solution worked for me was the following.

There was a post suggesting to increase the distance between the Display port cable to the receiver. I had a very short USB type C to type A converter with me. Since technically, this might increase the distance, I thought to give it a go. I tried to plug in this to see whether it would make any improvements (Figure1).

With this hack, the keyboard and mouse functionality became somewhat manageable.

Solution

There was another suggestion to plug in to a USB port in the other side of the laptop. The only reason I didn’t try this by then was that USB port was a lose one. So, with a simple paper hack I got a fix for the loose port and plugged in the receiver. Yes!, this indeed solved the issue.

The reason I suspect is due to some interference (I’m speculating) with the radio signal received by the receiver due to the Display port connector. The reason why I suspect it was not due to USB Hub getting bottlenecked is that type C converter solution worked to some extent. If I had a USB type A male to female extension cable, then it could have also resolved the issue, but this I didn’t try yet.

In conclusion, if you are also facing the same issue, try to plugin to a USB port from the other side of the laptop. In case are no such available USB ports, could try to use a USB extension cable (Figure2).
